Innsbruck passes the flag to Canfranc

The 2nd World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Innsbruck-Stubai 2023 have officially ended and the grand finale was celebrated with an atmospheric Closing Ceremony. CEO Alexander Pittl passed the flag bearing the logos of the World Mountain Running Association, the International Trail Running Association and the International Association of Ultra Runners on to Fernando Sanchez, mayor of Canfranc, the town in the Spanish pyrenees that is set to host the WMTRC 2025.

Before doing so, Alexander Pittl asked the majority of the 400 volunteers from all over the world to join him on stage and thanked them for their support. “They are the backbone of any such event; without them, the execution would simply be impossible.” Nadeem Khan, as a representative for the global athletics association World Athletics had nothing but praise for the event: “There is only one word to express how I feel: Wow.”

The short downpour did nothing to dampen the mood on the forecourt of the Tyrol State Theater and after an acrobatic slackline show, Tim Bendzko pumped up the audience consisting of trail runners, coaches and fans, providing a worthy finish for what turned out to be a celebration of mountain and trail running.
